Love Letter Game Project Pack

Before jumping into these resources, be sure to read the general outline of these game design projects found on this page.

About the Game

Love Letter is a popular game created by Seiji Kanai and published by Alderac Entertainment Group. It's a very simple game that uses only 16 cards. It has spawned several editions such a Batman version and the Hobbit version. Other games are also based on it, such as the many Lost Legacy games.

The simple, fun rules appeal to players of many ages and game tastes. Students will have fun tweaking the card effects and renaming them so they fit the theme of your lesson.

The publisher of the game has given me permission to use it this way. Please support them by buying at least one copy of the game to use in class. Also, remind students that their versions of the game cannot be sold for profit.

Template for Printed Components

This template for the cards will be used in the Play and Make stages below. Since See this page for information on making cards for these games. As I mentioned above, please consider supporting the publisher of the game by buying at least one copy for use in class.

The Play Stage

The full rules to Love Letter can be found at this link. This video explains how the game is played. And I wrote this rule summary and clarification sheet to quickly address common questions.

In order to play, students will need these components for each group. The game works for 2 - 4 players, but it's best for 3 or 4.
  • The printed cards, as described above in the Template section
  • Around 10 chips per group - These can be poker chips, bingo chips, plastic coins or any small tokens.

The Make Stage

The Planning Sheet for Love Letter has some specific questions and suggestions for redesigning the game. Be sure the students get a copy of that and the template above.

The Test Stage

Here's the Playtest Sheet for Love Letter.

The Reflect Stage

And this is the Reflection Sheet.

Permissions

See the permissions page for general information about modifying or sharing these resources.

If students create a game based on Love Letter and share it, please include a statement in any files, webpages or the rule booklet that states, "This game is based on an original game created by Seiji Kaini called Love Letter. You can find out more about that game at https://www.alderac.com/loveletter/."

Note that unlike other games on this site, students cannot sell their games based on Love Letter for profit. The publisher was very kind to allow me to use their game in this way, but they did specifically make that request.
